Wedding Invitations & Stationery, Young and Inspiring - Jul 5, 2019
Our series ‘Young and Inspiring’ showcases fresh, exciting new talent powerhouses from the design, fashion and event domains who specialize in creating dream weddings for couples with stars in their eyes.
A graduate from one of India’s leading design colleges, Puneet Gupta has earned several accolades for his work as a wedding stationer and trousseau packing expert. His roster of clients include the members of the royal families of India, politicians, fashion icons, and artists. His brand, Puneet Gupta Invitations, has collaborated with prestigious bridal platforms and television shows over the years. In a candid interview, Puneet Gupta speaks to us about his achievements, inspiration, and goals.
From being a gold medallist at NIFT to becoming one of India’s top wedding invitation designers, how did your journey unfold?
“As a child, I was always fond of greeting cards and only needed an occasion to make one for somebody. When I entered NIFT, my perspective towards design changed completely, and I began paying closer attention to the experience that a creation offered along with other minute details. After graduating from college, I launched my studio in a very unorganized invitation market where products beyond paper cards were not received as well. Therefore, carving my path and making people accustomed to invitation etiquettes and styles that were far more evolved came with its fair share of difficulties. However, my journey has been powered by passion and is one that I wouldn’t exchange for anything else.”
A number of famous personalities are a part of your clientele, right from Shankar Mahadevan and Sachin Pilgaonkar to celebrity duo Dipika Kakar and Shoaib Ibrahim. How does it feel to know you are one of the most sought-after invitation designers in the country?
“I think one should always stay rooted to the ground and not forget their humble beginnings. That said, it’s always interesting to work with people from different walks of life. It feels great to work with brides and known faces. My ideas encourage celebrities to move out of set templates and identify their own styles, especially since other famous personalities are doing so too.”
What inspires you to create such stunning invites that reflect unparalleled creativity and aesthetics?
“My clients who come to me with their dreams of unique wedding invitations, of course! This is what drives a designer’s creative instinct and leads us to the path of discovering novel concepts that no one has explored before. Virtual reality-based invites, origami-based invites, 3D pop-up book, invites… these are all unique ideas we have worked on. Just the passion to create something different, something that has never been crafted before, is what keeps us going.”
As a respected and experienced wedding stationer and a trousseau trunk specialist, how familiar is the Indian market to this section of the wedding industry?
“While bridal trousseaus have long been a part of Indian weddings, the trend of stylized trunks, which was initially just meant for the high-society brides, is catching on with everyone else too. Today all brides want to carry their belongings in style. A wedding is a celebration of a lifetime, where everything is larger than life from the clothes to the wedding decor, and the trousseau along with its presentation is as important as the things in it. Owing to the Indian tradition of pampering the brides, Puneet Gupta Fine Crafted Goods offers its trousseau collection of Mughal pop trousseau trunks, designer packing, clutches, and other fashion accessories.”
Which wedding invitation or trousseau trunk will always be close to your heart…?
“A virtual reality (VR)-based wedding invitation that we recently made for a couple is something that we’re in love with at the moment. Initially, traditional wedding cards with calligraphy fonts made way for those with quirky fonts and funky elements like Ganesha playing chess for a chess-themed invite, and now it was time to introduce something that would surpass that. With this thought in mind, we began our research, and eventually came up with the idea of working on a wedding invitation like this one. The couple was eager to explore something new, and while everyone has seen VR-based wedding decorations, a wedding invitation like this had never been done before.”
A celebrity whose invite or trousseau trunk is on your bucket list?
“ I have two on my dream list – Scarlett Johansson and Beau Colin Jost.”
