If you are a bride-to-be, we bet you have been pinning outfit inspirations you came across online months in advance, planning trips to your favorite designers’ stores and blocking dates of recommended makeup and hair stylists. We get it; there is a lot that goes into looking your best on your special day.
Recently bride Sanjhana Reddy floored us with her gorgeous wedding wardrobe. With her background in fashion design, she planned each look in advance and incorporated a range of colors and design elements into each outfit. Here, she shares her style inspirations and trousseau planning tips for others brides-to-be.
1. Tell us about the vision that you had for yourself as a bride.
“I have been a dreamer and find a sense of romance in the world of my imagination. Therefore, I wanted my wedding looks to be just as beautiful as a dream. That was the picture that I had created in my mind. When it came to the nuances of the ensembles, I made sure that my clothes were a nod to my Indian roots, while adding a few whimsical and contemporary hints to the overall looks.”
2. How did you go about planning your wedding wardrobe?
“One of the primary factors that I took into account was the colors that I was going to wear for each function. While most brides either stick to light or bright tones, I wanted to optimize the whole variety of colors. Thus, I decided to go from light to bright with each passing event. Another thing I paid attention to were the kinds of fabrics and work that I wanted in my trousseau. I wanted to experiment with lace, which is not a typical choice for most modern brides, have mirror work on one of my outfits for its bling quotient, and lastly, have an attire that made use of two-tone fabrics. Once the colors and the detailing were in place I began finalizing the designers I would go to and then flew down to Mumbai to their flagship stores to place my orders.”
3. What kind of vibe were you trying to achieve for each function?
Mehndi
“For this function, I wanted to break away from the norm of wearing yellow. Therefore, I chose to go with a nude gown. Shantanu & Nikhil are one of the very few designers in India who work with Chantilly lace. Since this is a fabric that I wanted to have in my bridal selection, I knew my mehndi outfit was going to be designed by them.”
Sangeet
“This one is the most lively functions of a wedding, and I wanted my clothes to be a reflection of the happy mood. The outfit for this function was designed by me. After graduating from Istituto Marangoni in Milan, and then after working under Sabyasachi Mukherjee sir himself, I felt confident that I would be able to translate my emotions into my attire for this event. Moreover, designing for my wedding seemed like a good way to launch my label. I wore an orange and nude-toned zardozi lehenga for this function.”
Pre-Wedding Lunch
“I feel like nobody does bling better than Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and for the pre-wedding lunch, I wanted to ‘shine bright like a diamond.’ Thus, an ink blue outfit with heavy mirror work by this designer duo was my outfit of choice.”
Wedding
“This one, needless to say, was the most important event of all and I wanted to look heaven-sent for this ceremony. I was going for a goddess-like facade and to achieve this there couldn’t be a better designer to go to than my mentor – Sabyasachi Mukherjee. I wore a red Sabyasachi saree with its signature marori border.”
Cocktail Dinner
“I was going for a ‘Pastel Princess’ vibe for this function, and Anita Dongre’s Seasons Collection was love at first sight for me! The best part was that I got to customize it too! So I pieced together the different elements that I liked from three different lehengas to make a single pastel green lehenga that was out of this world!”
4. How would you describe your bridal shopping experience?
“I would describe my bridal shopping experience in just one word – memorable!”
5. What advice would you give brides-to-be who are putting together their wedding trousseau?
“Brides-to-be should just enjoy the moments and go ahead with the vision they have created for themselves. It will all be perfect! However, there are a couple of dos and don’ts to keep in mind. Do have a clear-cut vision of what you want to wear and how you want to look. Do plan your looks at least three months in advance as wedding outfits take that long to make if they are made to measure. My third tip does not have to do with clothes, but rather, it impacts your overall looks – do finish your makeup and hair trials and finalize your artists about two months in advance. Lastly, don’t get influenced or carried away by other people’s thoughts or opinions.”
