What would it take to build India as a leading destination for weddings in the world, what is the India advantage and what is the India challenge? And importantly, what is the wedding industry? Over Sunday, i.e. May 5, 2024, and Monday, May 6, 2024, leading government officials, industry veterans and planners from across India and the globe came together to discuss the answers to these questions. Hosted at the Pink City, this was the first ever WedInIndia Expo, held as part of the Great Indian Travel Bazaar 2024. The WedinIndia Expo started with a welcome address by Smt Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary Department of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan with an inaugural address by Smt Manisha Saxena, Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and a vote of thanks by Shailesh Pathak, Secretary General, FICCI. This was hosted at the Rambagh Palace.
On Sunday, Parthip Thyagrajan, CEO and co-founder of WeddingSutra.com, hosted a panel discussion titled “India Awaits: Evaluating the readiness of India’s wedding ecosystem to face international competition”. The panelists were Monisha Dewan, Vice-President sales and distribution south Asia, Marriott International; Ritika Gupta, Vice-President Corporate Sales, Northern Region, Taj Hotel Resorts and Palaces; Rajan Sehgal, Co-Founder & Advisor, Premier Lifestyle Events; Vandana Mohan, founder of the Wedding Design Company, and Brian Tellis, Past President EEMA.
The panelists discussed the evolution of the wedding industry over the last 20 years, the availability of a multitude of venues and topography, and the opportunity for #WedonRails and luxury train travel. What truly sets India apart when it comes to being a wedding host, said Vandana Mohan, is that we mean it when we say Atithi Devo Bhava i.e. The guest is god.
Leading wedding planners from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru were there. They included Vandana Mohan of The Wedding Design Company, Chetan Vohra and Arpita Gandhi of Weddingline, Prerana Saxena of Theme Weaver Designs, Siddharth Ganeriwala of Aura Events & Wedding Wows, Neha Mehrotra Suri of Foreign Wedding Planners, Shruti Tiwary of Vogue Luxury Weddings, Aarti Mattoo of Momentum Weddings, Ruchika Bansal Arora of Plush Weddings, Hemant Kale of Swaaha, Bhavnesh Sawhney of FB Celebrations, Siddharth Chaturvedi, Aarti Manocha of Milestones to Memories, Siddesh Kandiyil of Watermark, Birju Gariba of Iskra Events & Celebrations, Zashank and Shashank of Tailormade Experiences, Pradeep Chander of Marriage Colours, Pritesh Sharma of Mapsor Experiential Weddings, Devanshi Patel of Shreem Events, Sneh Dalal of Globally Local Weddings and Joel John of Rainmaker Events and Entertainments.
