Top bridal looks from Lakme Fashion Week (Winter Festive 2016)
Bridal Fashion and Beauty - Sep 9, 2016
From shimmer and sparkle to quirky and minimalist, we witnessed an inspirational range of bridal wear at the recently concluded Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2016. Take a front row seat as we present a curated list of the top 10 bridal looks from the Lakme Fashion Week (Winter/Festive 2016)
1. Sabyasachi Mukherjee for the Royal Touch
Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s grand finale at the Lakme Fashion Week featured a glowing and pregnant Kareena Kapoor as the showstopper. Looking every inch a royal queen, she strode the ramp in a dull grey lehenga that was heavily embellished with gold thread work and tassels from Sabyasachi’s ‘Illuminate’ collection. The muted colour as well as the long, full-sleeved kurti over the lehenga was a departure from the rich, feisty hues and navel-baring cholis that typically rule the bridal catwalk. So expect black, grey and silver ensembles to take centre stage this season as Sabyasachi, one of India’s top trend-setting designers, sets the note with these colours at LakmeFashion Week.
2. Shantanu and Nikhil for Spanish Splendour
Malaika Arora Khan looked mesmerising as she glided down the ramp in a black cut-out mermaid style gown with full-length slit sleeves and gold embellishments. The black ensemble by Shantanu and Nikhil was both daring and demure, and is a perfect option for a haute reception or glamorous after party. The designer duo’s collection was titled ‘The Matador’s Mistress’ and found expression in fabrics like velvet, tulle and silk. Formal Spanish-inspired gowns, capes, broad-shouldered matador jackets over embellished skirts, and accents in rich reds, deep blues, emerald greens and passionate plum wowed the audience. So go ahead and be inspired to experiment with a pick from this collection that will transform you into a sizzling Senorita.
3. Sonam and Paras Modi for Metallic Magic
Black was again one of the highlights of SVA’s designer duo Sonam and Paras Modi’s collection when actress and showstopper Prachi Desai dazzled in a black lehenga with beautiful motifs and a shoulder-baring blouse with matching threadwork. The collection titled ‘Mon Passe’ was inspired by ancient art deco which was evident in their choice of fabrics such as metallic brocade alongside other natural fabrics. Long red toga style gowns, glittering edgy lehengas with jackets and innovative cuts of blouses and bodices alongside a beautiful colour palette makes this collection a very versatile one for modern brides.
4. Manish Malhotra for Dramatic Sparkle
A sprightly Shraddha Kapoor strode down the ramp clad in Bollywood’s favourite designer Manish Malhotra’s youthful ensemble featuring a dark green – almost black – velvet lehenga with a rather daring blouse that had applique-style embroidery. This outfit was part of the designer’s ‘XTech’ collection at the Lakme Fashion Week. That same youthful vibe of Shraddha’s ensemble makes the designer’s occasion wear collection perfect for sangeet and mehndi functions as it features net and chiffon fabrics paired with signature embroidery, festive florals, sparkly sequins, ravishing resham work incorporated in contemporary ways in lehengas and anarkalis. For example, a bright yellow lehenga with sequins was paired with a modern blouse with grey silk panels and netted applique work. We recommend paying special attention to the innovative blouses which the designer has paired with gorgeous lehengas, and stunning gowns with floral motifs.
5. Ridhi Mehra for Minimalist Pursuits
Actress Ileana D’Cruz showcased designer Ridhi Mehra’s finely-honed creativity in a deep maroon lehenga with a floor-length chiffon and deep-cut embroidered choli from her ‘Arcadia’ collection. Perfect for a grand wedding, the ensemble had all the hallmarks of this fast-growing designer’s signature stamp of craftsmanship and minimalism. This showstopper lehenga featured a rather interesting fountain motifs at the hem, a departure from floral twirls and paisley bootis. Check out her lehengas in hues of white and pink with floral motifs and loose jackets, deep-cut blouses and dupattas in net, georgette and crepe. This collection offers options of stunning ensembles in lighter shades alongside darker ones for added variety.
6. Payal Singhal for Classic Charm
Modern silhouettes and sharply-tailored ensembles in glitzy pastels were the highlight of designer Payal Singhal’s collection titled ‘Pakizah’. There was lavish use of silk in many outfits, be it modern ‘dhotis’ to elegant skirts and tops in separate hues but with matching motifs. The reigning popularity of black found expression in her designs too, from lehengas to dresses and ‘dhotis’ paired with embroidered tops. This collection allows one to mix and match separates with elan, and is ideal for modern multi-function weddings. Bollywood newcomer Saiyami Kher was the showstopper in a pastel embroidered lehenga with an off-shoulder blouse – and this no-dupatta look may get popular thanks to its western vibe.
7. Anushree Reddy for Contemporary Cool
Pink, yellow, green – these fun, festive colours were combined in fetching ways in Anushree Reddy’s vibrant collection titled ‘The Wedding Chronicle’. The effervescence of the collection stands out making it perfect for bridal trousseaus with a peppy, breezy vibe. Think silver blouses, airy dupattas, floral motifs and kitschy glittery trims and unusual colour combinations. Shilpa Shetty owned the ramp in an orange lehenga with pretty pink dupatta that is a safe yet sensational choice for traditional dos especially when paired with the designer’s body-hugging cholis or strappy bodices.
8. Saroj Jalan for Traditional Elegance
Actress Radhika Apte looked every inch a bride in her showstopping zardosi-embroidered velvet lehenga in traditional red. Part of designer Saroj Jalan’s ‘Gulzar’ collection, it signified the traditional elements of the designer’s signature work, be it in fabrics, motifs or ornate embellishments. Worried that the lehenga looks too heavy? The designer says that it is very light and easy to manage as it is almost weightless. Her creations spanned shades from rich red, orange and pinks and are distinct thanks to their meticulous hand-stitched motifs in gold and silver thread.
9. Payal Khandwala for the Fierce Fabulosity
With her collection titled “The New Emperor’, Payal Khandwala’s edgy collection featured specially developed fabrics from Benares, sharply-tailored silhouettes and layered ensembles that were a refreshing departure from traditional flowing lehengas. The colour palette spanned jewel tones of green, purple, red, gold and magenta. This collection eschewed pastels for powerful blocks of deep hues especially in her blazers, capes and ponchos. Take a pick from this collection if you want to flaunt an edgier vibe or make an alternate statement at a wedding.
10. Gaurang Shah for Wonderful Weaves
There’s a reason why designer and textile maestro Gaurang Shah is so popular when it comes to Indian weddings – his handloom textiles are works of art in themselves. His collection for the Lakme Fashion Week titled ‘Vrindavan’ featured rich traditional fabrics from all across India such as Kanjeevaram, Kotah and Banarasi brocade. Ornate ghagras, lehengas and anarkalis shared pride of place alongside light sarees draped in interesting ways and featuring traditional motifs and arresting colour combinations. When it comes to weave and weft, Gaurang has his finger on the pulse of modern fabrics with an Indian essence, and we predict this collection will find pride of place in many bridal trousseaus this season.
