Minna and Rohin, Kerala

Every couple dreams of their wedding day. However, the Kerala floods proved to be a nightmare for Minna and Rohin who had to cancel and reschedule their wedding in record time.
Minna and Rohin were in the throes of their wedding prep; they had chosen a special date and were looking forward to their loved ones flying into Kerala to celebrate the special occasion with them. Their wedding which followed their engagement was going to be a meticulously planned week-long affair with a host of vendors standing ready to deliver on the big day. However, fate – or rather – nature had different plans for them. Around the time the wedding was slated to be held, Kerala faced unceasing downpours which resulted in the worst flooding in the state in 96 years. When the devastating situation affected their wedding plans as well as the flights of their loved ones, the couple stayed focused on what was important.
After the catastrophic floods, Minna and Rohin only had a few days to re-plan their ceremony. They worked as a tightly focused team to make their dream wedding day a reality once more. Here, the bride shares her journey of love and highlights from her wedding day.
How We Met
Minna shares, “Rohin is based in Dubai, and I hail from Kochi, in Kerala. However, I’ve lived in Bangalore after passing out from school. Rohin and I share the same best friends – they were my besties in school and his in college. Three years ago, these friends upped their game and decided to set us up. So they sent a ‘Friend Request’ from his Facebook profile to me without his knowledge! And the rest, as they say, is history. We got talking and made things official when I went to Dubai and met him in person. Yes, that was the first time I was meeting him after talking to him for six months!”
The Proposal
“When I was studying in Europe, one of our common best friends decided to visit me and go on a European tour. I joined him and Rohin on that holiday too. The proposal took place when Rohin got down on his knees and proposed to me on the beautiful Charles Bridge in Prague. My engagement ring is very special as it has the date and Charles Bridge engraved on it.”
The Wedding
“We were supposed to get married on August 18, 2018. It was a special date not only because it looked like 18.08.18 when written, but also because it was going to be the date when Rohin and I would officially become a couple after three years of being together. But clearly, something else was in store for us. During the months leading to our wedding, all the planning and execution were in complete order. I was very particular about not turning into a bridezilla on the D-day. Unfortunately, I said that a little too soon as the most stressful and unexpected disaster was awaiting us. One which involved a grave and dreadful natural calamity right in the midst of all the action – the 2018 Kerala floods.”
“When just two days were left for our wedding celebrations to commence, we faced an unprecedented downpour that went on for more than 24 hours without stopping. When the shutters of the dams were opened, I knew we were in trouble because my house is less than 100 meters away from the banks of a river. While our friends and family members were trying to figure out a way to reach Kerala to attend the wedding, my parents and I were stuck inside our house with no power or any means to get out as the ground floor was submerged in water, and the water level was only rising with higher currents every passing minute. Thanks to our the efforts of our loved ones who called for help, we got rescued by a fire force boat. We walked around 3 km to reach a relief camp where my parents and I spent the night. It was not really how I imagined I’d be spending my wedding eve. We somehow managed to reach the city side the next day and then took the decision to push the wedding to a date when both, Rohin and I, and our families were in a state to be a part of it emotionally and physically. And that’s how we fixed August 23 as our wedding date.”
“It felt really bad that not all of our close friends or family could make it for our wedding. However, I am happy that we still managed to pull off our ceremonies in record time in the face of such a crisis. Our families stood by us through this challenging time, supporting us and ensuring everything went smoothly. They were our real heroes. A big shout out goes to our wedding team too. From the decor to our photography teams, they all stood by us and made one of the biggest days of our lives happen!”
“We got married in Kochi at a simple church ceremony followed by a lunch reception and a cocktail party later in the night for friends and cousins. Before the wedding, we had some pre-wedding functions too which were more like a fun gathering for loved ones with dances and performances. Our vendors stepped up to make themselves available and responsive to help us reassemble our special day.”
