Kanika and Anraj’s Platinum Love Story
Precious Platinum - Oct 1, 2021
Kanika Hora, an operations manager, and Anraj Singh, an overseas sales and marketing specialist first crossed paths at a shared office cafeteria in a Bangkok office building where they exchanged a few shy glances, both of them were keen on striking up a conversation. With no mutual friends to introduce them, Kanika took matters into her own hands and looked up Anraj on a dating app. After a swift swipe right, the duo started chatting and then, dating. Six months later, Anraj’s internship came to an end and he moved back to Mumbai to pursue a full-time job. Anraj shares, “Our time apart made us realize how much we loved each other. Managing a long-distance relationship was tricky though as Kanika’s work shift ended when mine began. Determined to spend time together, we would cut short our lunch breaks to call each other and discuss how our day was going, share anecdotes and even a meal if possible.”
“Nothing says love like packing up your life to start over in a new country with the person you love. Anraj did that for me,” says Kanika. “From the day we started dating, he has shown how much he is invested and committed to our relationship. And even though a large part of our courtship was long distance, we made it work.
Larger-than-life gestures of love are well and good but meaningful moments of support are truly what makes you feel loved, what reinforces your love. Kanika shares, “I was in between jobs after the wedding and that’s when the pandemic hit. Needless to say, the opportunities on the job market were slim. Thankfully, I landed a senior role that would allow me to expand my horizons. And even though I’m a seasoned professional in my field, the responsibilities I juggled were a different order of complexity as I went from managing ten people to a hundred and three! The sudden change overwhelmed me and I found the transition challenging. I retreated into my shell and started overthinking every small decision that I made. That’s where Anraj stepped up. He understood my predicament and every day he would find new ways to refresh my mind. My habit of retreating to my room for hours to dwell on my thoughts was broken as he would whisk me away for walks and make me look at the brighter side of life by appreciating the life we have. Knowing my love for travel, he even scouted for local spots where we could safely go for peaceful hikes during the lockdown. And during those long nights when work got the best of me, he was always there, ready to listen to my fears, empathize and offer solutions. Be it surprising me with a laptop stand to ease my posture pains or finding new hobbies that would distract me from my overthinking, Anraj was my anchor who kept things happy and positive for me while I found my footing. It took me five to six months to acclimatize to the new role and take charge on the professional front. But I know that I am far better now at handling the range of emotions that come with career transition thanks to Anraj’s rock-solid belief in me and his unwavering support. He helped me regain my focus, cheered me on, and encouraged me to concentrate on the bigger picture. Today, I know that if life throws a curveball at me he will be right there by my side to face it along with me.”
Building a life and a career in a foreign country is a daunting task and it was no different for Anraj who moved to Thailand to be with Kanika. Anraj recollects, “I started from scratch in a new country and had no idea what the future held. Kanika always encouraged me by reminding me that there’s always the first step to everything and to focus on just putting one foot in front of the other. Soon enough I found a job. While it provided me stability and regular income, I yearned to do something on my own. Knowing this Kanika suggested that I explore a side venture. I was hesitant since I was in a new country, and it was a big financial decision. Both of us brainstormed for three months and it heartened me to see Kanika so involved. There were times when I would give up but she would be ready with new ideas and plans every morning! Finally, we started a side business with a zero inventory model of regular edible products. And not only has this venture honed my marketing skills but it has also made me confident about my future.”
Taking each challenge in their stride, the couple has now taken the momentous step of buying a home together, a dream that they’ve cherished for a long time. Kanika shares, “Earlier we used to live in a small rented apartment and always dreamt of having our own space. After months of scouting and saving up, we found a home that was just perfect! Buying a home can be an expensive affair, especially in the early days of marriage. Once you’ve bought it, there are several more expenses that fall on your plate and for us, it was no different. The final loan amount along with other expenditures was quite hefty and I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to manage it. I was almost ready to bow out and settle for a smaller house or buy one later. However, Anraj wasn’t ready to give up on our dream. He showed me all his calculations and said ‘If we work hard together, we can make this happen. It’ll take time but I’m sure we can do this!’ His conviction in us spurred me to take the plunge. Of course, we have a long road ahead as we make plans to embark on a new beginning but as long we’re together, I’m sure it’ll all work out.”
Mutually appreciative of their strong bond and taking turns to build each other up, Kanika and Anraj’s love has instilled a sense of reassurance in them regardless of what the future holds.
