Master the craft of capturing a photograph of you and your better half like a pro!

• What are the key must-dos for that perfect self-portrait?

“The key ingredient is to be really comfortable as a couple. It takes a little extra effort to capture the right picture when you do it yourself. You will need a basic DSLR or a Camera Phone + Trigger/Remote Controller (easily available on Amazon) + a travel-friendly tripod for a self-portrait.

Understanding composition is the next factor. It sounds technical but trust me it is really fun once you know how. Make a list of the kind of pictures you wish to capture whether close-ups or wide angles and once you know what you want to create, it’s really easy to do it.”

• How to make sure you capture a wider frame?

“Every entry-level DSLR comes with a kit lens which usually offers a wide angle perspective. Even smartphones these days have a good wide angle lens. If you don’t have a wide-angle lens, maintain a fair distance from the subject. You don’t need to know the complicated camera features. Auto function is adequate if you are clicking in good daylight conditions.

Let’s break it in 3 simple steps.

1. Put one person in a frame and decide which composition you want.

2. Lock focus point using auto mode.

3. Set the camera on a timer or use trigger from a distance to click pictures.”

• How to ensure you lock the focus to avoid blurry images?

“One person has to be in the frame to lock the focus on him/her. The other person who is behind the camera has to visualize oneself in the frame before clicking the shutter button on timer mode. Click the shutter and move into the frame as you imagined it. The person in the frame to lock the focus has to stay in the same place because the focus is locked on him/her. If that person moves, chances are that your camera will lose focus and it will end up giving you a blurry image.”

• How can you overcome challenging locations like Ladakh considering the extreme weather?

“Always remember the thumb rule – you are the main subject of your pictures. Carry easy wearable and removable jackets to manage the body temperature in between shots. For example, if it is winter time, carry a jacket, take it off for a particular shot and wear it again post shoot.”
